Under the skin, 2018, 120x130, woad on canvas and polaroids
Made with woad, traditionally used to extract indigo pigment in Europe since the Neolithic era and intrinsically linked with the tradition of craft and the body. The works parallel dying with woad and the photographic process of development.
Under the Skin maps where the artists produced their work for the exhibition. Engaging with the concept of studioless through the digital platform with pluszero, creating systems of support through our long-distance collaboration and friendship.
With Polaroids and their spontaneous quality, the process is archived in its place of production. The works seize and question the post-studio conditions and its roots in our current time. Where the artist, without space, redefining the boundaries creating alternative modes of production, but also, the work itself being shaped by the world that surrounds it.
The installation is composed of paintings made over the course of the MFA. The first canvas, on the floor, supporting the pile, and the last one, 229, on the wall, closing the series.
229 is a composite of thousands of handmade ink markings made over 229 hours. Impelled by Michaux's “attempts to draw the flow of time", the work wants to seize the invisible. My painting thinks about making space from within, inspired by Merleau-Ponty, who emphasized the body as the primary site of knowing the world, that ‘we are the flesh of the world.'
Above all, it is about the lines and their repetitive nature recording the transience of time and inner tremor. The unstretched canvas is pre-dyed with colour extracted from Avocado and then drawn over, folded, and aged through the task. The work explores materiality, rhythm, and repetition, inspired by the systematic formal order of nature.
